A woman in northern France has admitted killing her eight newborn babies but said her husband knew nothing about it, the prosecutor in the case has said.
Dominique Cottrez, 47, has been placed under investigation over the deaths, while her husband has been freed without charge.
Mr Cottrez had initially faced investigation for allegedly concealing the bodies and not reporting crimes.
Mrs Cottrez faces charges of the voluntary homicide of the babies.
Being placed under investigation is the first stage of criminal proceedings that can lead to charges.
The prosecutor had requested the charges of failing to report the killings and hiding the bodies against Mr Cottrez, but the prosecutor said the investigating magistrate in the case had ruled against this.

If she had smothered one baby, perhaps that could be explained away somehow. But to kill your own babies 8 times is beyond comprehension and in not seeking contraception makes you think she took pleasure from the act and had absolutely no remorse. I'd throw away the key. |

It made me realize that I don't know of a single case where Muslims have killed their children. Here in the west, though, it seems like every week we hear about some woman killing her kids. From Susan Smith (who blamed it on blacks) to Andrea Yates (who blamed it on God), we seem to have an endless stream of baby killers while the Muslim world has none or nearly none.

| There is so much family involvement and support here I think it would be difficult for a mother to hide anything or kill a baby from stress or poor support. I go to some families and there can be 40 plus family members living in the same property, with a communal majelis. It's like walking into a primary school in vacation time, no way a kid could slip through the net in this type of society. |
